Men, we are talking to you!
We understand that the act of getting someone pregnant seems pretty easy.
It’s just sex, right?
Sure, all it really takes is for a woman’s egg to be fertilized by a man’s sperm.
But have you ever given much thought to how healthy and viable those sperm are?
We’re guessing it’s not something at the top of your mind. Especially for men in their 20’s and 30’s who feel strong, energetic and have a great libido.
Even a healthy libido does not ensure healthy, strong sperm.
Did you know there are many things you could be doing on a daily basis that are harming those little swimmers?
It takes new sperm cells about 70-90 days to mature and develop. During that time of growth the health of your sperm can be damaged or affected by many things such as:
Smoking (cigarettes, cigars, recreational drugs), alcohol and other toxins can lower sperm count and quality
Poor diet and obesity are linked to reduced sperm motility and count
Stress can impact hormone levels, affecting sperm production
Exposure to heat, such as from hot tubs or laptops, can harm sperm production
Radiation and prolonged exposure to chemicals can negatively affect sperm quality
Varicocele (swelling of veins in the testicles) can reduce sperm count
Sexually transmitted infections (STIs) may lead to infertility
If you and your partner are ready to start trying to conceive then you want to make sure you’re creating the best environment possible for those sperm to grow and thrive.

During these 3 months preconception you want to follow these tips to ensure the healthiest sperm possible makes it to the egg:
Starting a detox and eliminating toxins of all kinds will greatly benefit hormonal health (testosterone levels), libido, and the quantity and quality of your sperm. You can check out our Better Body Detox if you need support with this.
Eating an organic whole foods diet with lean meats, an array of colorful veggies and fruits along with moderate exercise throughout the week has shown to help with weight loss and increased sperm count and motility.
Mindfulness exercises and time for fun and hobbies help reduce stress and promote healthy hormone balance. This could be guided meditation, yoga, tai chi, walking on the beach, surfing, fishing, golf, non-competative sport or activity, dancing, and creative projects are just a few ways to unwind and relax.
Keep those swimmers cool! Wearing loose boxers instead of briefs and choosing breathable materials such as cotton, bamboo, tencel or lycocell. Keeping laptops on a desk and out of your lap. Do your best to keep your phone out of your pocket, or at least put it in airplane mode. Avoid sitting or biking for long periods of time.
Semen analysis will give you a good idea of the current health of your sperm (count, motility, morphology). This is especially beneficial to know now if you have had any STI’s in the past, or issues with swelling in the testicles, past injuries, etc.
Being proactive and making time to better your health now will benefit everyone in the long run.
Healthy virile sperm = Healthy happy baby = Happy easier parenthood 🙂
